Frequently asked questions
How do I work out the force of a gas strut?
Multiply the lid weight (kg) by 9.81 to get newtons, then by the distance from the hinge to the lid’s centre of gravity. Divide that by the number of struts and by the distance from the hinge to the strut’s mounting point, then add about 10% for friction. Our free gas strut calculator does this for you.
Which way up should a gas strut be mounted?
Mount it rod-down where possible. This keeps the oil over the seal, which gives smoother damping at the end of travel and a longer life.
What is a locking gas strut?
A locking gas strut can stop and hold anywhere along its stroke, released by a plunger or lever. It suits adjustable seats, tables, beds and medical equipment.

Gas strut sizing tips
- Mount rod-down. This keeps the seal lubricated and gives smooth damping at the end of travel.
- Choose the stroke from the opening angle. As a rule of thumb, the strut’s stroke should be about half the change in distance between its two fixing points from closed to fully open.
- Leave room for movement. Fit ball-socket or eyelet end fittings so the strut can swing freely through its arc without side load on the rod.
- Remember temperature. Gas force rises and falls by roughly 3% for every 10 °C, which matters on vehicles and outdoor equipment.
- Lifting a heavy lid? Use two struts, one on each side, so the lid does not twist.
